ATTIC VENTILATION
Attic venting is an important aspect in maintaining a healthy energy efficient home. There are 3 main benefits to ensuring that your attic space, either in a residential house or commercial building, is adequately vented.
1) Increase the lifecycle of the roof material
2)
Reduce the load on the air-conditioning system
3)
Eliminate trapped moisture during the winter
As attic insulation performance has increased over time (i.e. higher R-values), ventilation has proven to be valuable in controlling a correspondingly increased problem; Ice damming. Ice damming occurs when specific areas of the roof become warmer than others, causing a dangerous freeze-thaw pattern that allows the snow to melt and refreeze, creating an ice dam that works its way under the shingles. When this ice melts it creates possible roof leaks. Ventilation ensures that roof deck temperatures remain consistent so ice damming cannot occur.
These issues have been experienced in obvious colder, high snow design conditions, and are especially damaging in cottage & lake properties that are generally unoccupied during winter seasons. The benefits are found when a solar powered attic fan is installed, and operates independently of grid power.... all year round.
SOLAR ATTIC FAN
Powered completely by free solar energy, this sleek and efficient vent is both compact and quiet. Fully operational right from the box, it installs easily, with no electrical wiring. And let’s not forget powerful! Operating up to 850 cfm, a single 10 watt unit can fully vent up to 1,200 square feet. A 20 watt unit, operating up to 1,275 cfm can fully vent up to 2,000 square feet. And the 30 watt unit, operating at up to 1,550 cfm can fully vent up to 2,500 square feet.
How Many Solar Attic Fans Do I Need?
Several factors can affect the amount of attic ventilation a home needs. Variables such as vaulted ceilings, amount of existing venting (soffit, ridge, gable), attic shape, pitch and obstructions must all be taken into account when calculating the amount of attic venting needed. Your dealer will determine the correct size unit or units needed for your specific installation. The output chart below reflects the average venting capacity and cfm output for each solar panel size available.
Solar Attic Fan Output Guideline
Solar Panel Style Venting Capacity CFM Output
10 Watt Model up to 1,200 sf up to 850 cfms
20 Watt Model up to 2,000 sf up to 1,275 cfms
30 Watt Model up to 2,500 sf up to 1,550 cfms
50 Watt Model up to 3,100 sf up to 1,900 cfms
*
CFM refers to cubic feet of air moved per minute. The higher the cfm number, the greater the capacity to move air
